About the Artist

“My paintings represent a visual journal of my life in Maine, reflecting my love of nature and my participation in it. Spending time outdoors walking, hiking, kayaking and biking, I have the opportunity to stop and look closely at my surroundings. It is this connection to nature that I want to share with others. Often, my intent is to give the viewer a sense of “place” – of being there, whether climbing a rock, floating down a river, or looking closely at various plant and animal life.

A recurring theme in my work is the way in which light falls upon objects creating patterns and reflections. I prefer late afternoon light for its golden hues and long shadows. Often it is a body of water that first attracts me. The element of water is particularly interesting with its constant motion, its transparencies and reflective qualities and how it interacts with the land and sky.

In recent paintings, I have been exploring the area of the subconscious in an attempt to combine and integrate the inner landscape of the mind with my more representational landscape imagery. These paintings usually have a double meaning that invite the viewer to be a participant in the piece, and hopefully invoke the understanding that there is always more for us to discover. I call these works Modern Allegorical Paintings.“
